We had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas with the Oasis Church family on Christmas Eve. The Sunday School kids went Christmas caroling in the neighborhood which was followed by a wonderful potluck. We then had a time for Christmas songs, Bible Study from the Christmas Story and a candle lighting service. Thank you to Masami and her husband for hosting us at her beautiful home.

Today we deleated about 15 pages of old photos from our media page. It was sad to say goodbye to the old memories, but we needed to clear up a little space.

The entire full-time staff at Kansai Christian School went to Hong Kong for a few days to attend a conference for teachers in international Christian schools. Chris found the sessions and workshops to be very helpful in giving her the tools she needs to more effectively teach the children that God has put in her classroom this year. In the evening, the staff was able to go out and explore HK a bit, including eating duck (in place of turkey) on Thanksgiving.

This morning Michael had the opportunity to speak the high school students during their morning Bible class. Today was the first in a 4-part series on Spiritual Gifts. Each Monday in November he will be sharing with them about how to discover and use the gifts that God has given to them to bless, serve and build up the people around them. Please pray that the students would have open hearts to learn and grow in this important area.

Luke's bug project was due today. He had to collect 30 different kinds of insects from 12 different from 12 different orders. It was a lot of work, but the finished product turned out pretty well. Good Job Luke!

Inspired by yesterday's race, Michael signed up to run in the Kyoto Marathon in Feb 2017. This will be his second full marathon (and first in two years). He still has a lot of training to do and a little bit of weight to loose, but he is up for the challenge.

Since Michael was still in Spokane helping to sort through his mother's estate, he decided to run in the Spokane Half Marathon. Although he has been running regularly for the last 8 months, he hadn't really trained for such a long distance. Anyway, the race was hard and his legs gave out around mile 10, but he still made it to the end. The finisher's medal is of the famous clocktower in downtown Spokane's Riverfront Park.

Since Michael's mother didn't want anyone to "make a fuss" by having a traditional funeral, it was decided to have an open house instead. The theme was Hawaiian (since her and Bob had gotten married in Hawaii in January) and friends were invited to just drop by the house, chat and tell their stories of Nancy. Besides Bob, Michael and David, a small group of family from California came up to help host the event (see photo). Although the occasion was sad, the gathering was a wonderful time to remember and celebrate the life of Michael's mom. Co-workers, neighbors and church friends all mentioned how blessed they were by their friendship with Nancy.

Sad news from America...Michael's mom passed away today. Nancy had been fighting multiple myleoma (cancer of the bone marrow) for over 10 years and at the time of her passing was in the hospital receiving a stem-cell transplant. She seemed to be recovering well from the procedure until she suddenly developed a staph infection. With no immune system to fight the infection, it was a quick two days before she went to be with Jesus. her passing caught everyone by surprise. Michael was already planning a trip to the States to help her in the recovery stages after she was supposed to dismissed from the hospital in late September, but now he will leave on Tuesday. The photo below is the last photo taken of Nancy. She is taking a stroll down the hallway with her entourage, David (Michael's younger brother) and his sons, CJ & Parker.

Today was the first day of the new school year at KCS. Chris' 1st-2nd grade class only has 6 students this year, so her sophomore year of teaching should be a little quieter than her first. Luke started 10th grade, and since there are no junior or seniors boys in the school this year, he is the oldest male student in the school! We pray that both of them will have a wonderful year.

While Chris was in America, Michael and Luke embarked on Urban Hiking Adventure #5. This time they walked the Nankai train line from Namba Station to Izumi-sano Station. Along the way they stop in front of each station for a self as "proof" of their accomplishment. In total, they walked over 40km (about 25 miles) in just under 11 hours.
August 5-18, 2016
Chris took at quick trip to America to check in on her parents. Her mom's Alzheimer's is gradually getting worse, and her father showed noticeable decline in health. They are both living at Atherton Baptist Homes, and assisted care facility in Southern California.
August 1-5, 2016
Luke joined a group of kids from school as they all headed up to MK Camp in Gifu Prefecture for 4 days of fun and fellowship. The camp was small, but Luke enjoyed it very much. Below is a photo of the group from Ikoma that went up together (Michael was the driver!).

Today was Michael's last all-school chapel message of the year. He finished up his "Not of This World" series by sharing about how to be the salt of the Earth and the light of the world. Even though Jesus calls us not to conform to the ways of the world, he still wants us to be in the world and make an impact for the Kingdom of God. Please pray that the many seeds that were planted in the students would grow in their hearts and produce much fruit.

After two months of memorizing lines, learning songs and choreographing dance steps, tonight was the KCS performance of "Back To The Cross." The 100+ people who gather at Seseragi Hall in Minami Ikoma were greatly entertained as the students did a wonderful job! As soon at the curtain went down after the show, the kids backstage started asking, "Can we do it again?" A special thanks goes out to Chris and Ikumi for serving as co-directors again this year. Their hard work really paid off.

At the weekly chapel time at KCS, usually only 4 or 5 members of the worship team play on any given Friday. However, today there was a special guest and the WHOLE team got up to play/sing at once. We are really blessed to have such a wonderful group of students who are willing to serve the school in this way.

It was great to have Team Hippo with with us at Oasis Church, both last Sunday and today. Since the team had 10 people, their presence almost doubled the size of our group! They shared a bit about their experience in Japan and also led an afternoon seminar for parents. We are very thankful for their ministry to us over the last few days. We pray for the Lord's blessing as they head back to California tomorrow evening.

Even though it is a few weeks after Easter, Oasis Church took advantage of the nice, April weather to host a Family Easter outreach event. Held at the youth hostel in Hamadra Park, the event began with a Children's Easter Party. Team Hippo did the planning for this and we had about 20 children come (most from outside of the church) as well as their parents (see photo). We are thankful that so many people were able to hear the good news about the resurrection of Jesus. After the party, everyone went outside for a giant BBQ. This was a great time of food, fellowship and even a little singing. In total, about 60 people participated in the BBQ, again most of them from outside the church. Our prayer is that many people's hearts were touched and blessed by the Lord.

This week Team Hippo has been leading SLEW (Spiritual Life Emphasis Week) at KCS. After a time of singing, the younger students participated in a VBS type program and the older students worked on preparing their life maps. Both the team and the students really seemed to enjoy their afternoons together. Thanks Team Hippo for all of your hard work.

A team from Cerritos Baptist Church arrived today. Known officially as Team Hippo (because the leader's last name is Kaba, which is the Japanese word for hippo), they will be here for 10 days to serve at both Oasis Church and Kansai Christian School. We are so excited to have them with us and are very thankful to CBC for sending them our way.

Today Chris' 1st-2nd grade class visited the Instant Ramen Museum on their Spring field trip. The highlights of the day were the "My Cup Noodle Factory" (where the kids could make their own, personalized Cup-Noodle), and the "Instant Ramen Tunnel" (that displayed EVERY instant ramen package since it's invention in 1958). If you are ever in the Osaka area, it is worth a visit. And the best part? Admission is free!

Today was the first rehearsal for this year's KCS drama called "Back to the Cross." Chris is once again co-directing the musical. There is a lot of work to be done between now and April 29th, but the kids seem to be real excited.

After almost 4 years, Luke finally got his braces off! Unfortunately, once his wisdom teeth come in, the orthodontist said that he might have to put the braces back on for a little while, but for now Luke is happy to have them off. It is nice to see Luke's nice, white smile again.

February's all-school chapel message was about having undivided worship for Jesus. As Christians who are IN the world but not OF the world, we are often tempted to give part of our hearts to worldly things. However, as we learned from 1 Kings 18, God desires that would give our worship to Him, and Him alone.

My mom called this morning to tell us that she got married! We knew she was engaged, but she surprised us all by not telling us before hand about their plans. Her and Bob were married on the beach in Maui. How romantic! Congratulations to them both.

We took our anual group photo today at Oasis Church. We are blessed to be a part of this wonderful church family.

The first all-school chapel of the the new year was held today. Michael continued in his series called "Not Of This World" by considering one of the lines from our theme song this year that says "Take this world and give me Jesus." This lead us to Philippians 3:10 where Paul declares, "I want to know Christ." Please pray that the students would have a growing hungry to know Jesus more.

Today was Chris' birthday. We kept the celebration simple by going out to eat and then having ice cream cake from Baskin Robins (thanks Ikumi!)
