Michael begins training for Kobe Marathon. Can he lose a few pounds and get strong enough to shave a few more minutes off of his marathon time? Stay tunned to find out!

In late July and early August, Chris went to the States for two weeks to visit her parents. While it was good for her to see her mom and dad, both of their health had declined since she saw them last summer. Her mother's Alzheimer's has progressed to the point that she does not communicate at all. Chris didn't know if her mother even recognized her or not. It is hard for Chris to be away from her folks, but she is very thank for Atherton Baptist Homes, the care facility in which they reside.

After months of looking at empty houses (and being rejected twice simply because we were foreigners!), today we finally moved Heguri. Heguri is a small countryside community about 20 minutes south of our former place in Ikoma. We made the move for two reasons. First, rent is much cheaper in Heguri, and we are able to save about $400 a month in our new (and smaller) house. Also, we now live within walking distance to KCS for Chris and Luke. This will save on the daily train fare and will cut travel time to and from school each day. We are thankful for the new place that God has provided for us. Our prayer now is that we would get to know our new neighbors and beging to develop meaningful friendships with them.

Today we launched a new outreach ministry at Oasis Church called Kodomo Shokudo (Kid's Cafeteria). This is a nation-wide organization of civic, religious and volunteer groups that help to provide meals for hungry kids. With the rise of single parents in Japan, many young mothers have a hard time putting food on the table every day. On top of that, many elementary school kids are forced to find their own meals while their mothers are at work. Our desire at Oasis Church is to help out these families by providing a meal to anyone who wants one. We will start by doing this once a month, but if things go well, we may expand. Our desire is not just to feed the hungry kids, but also to build relationships with people in the neighborhood surrounding the church. Please pray that we can be the light of Jesus to those in Izumiotsu City.

The annual KCS Drama Night was held at Seseragi Hall in Minami Ikoma tonight. The kids performed the musical "Under God's Sea," and did a wonderful job. All of the months of heard work really paid off as they sang, danced and spoke of our need to trust in God. Chris and her fellow elementary school teacher, Ikumi, were once again co-directors for this year's production. Way to go!

Today we celebrated our 20th Anniversary of doing ministry in Japan. After the worship service at Oasis Church, the whole church family went to a Japanese restaurant near Kishiwada Castle (you can see it in the background of the group picture). The food was wonderful, and even include the traditional sea bream which Japanese traditionally each to celebrate special occasions. After the meal, various people got up to share their memories and express words of thanks. All in all, we were greatly blessed by our church family and their outpouring of appreciation for our service during these last 20 years.

Today, the elementary classes at KCS took at field trip to the Meiji Yogurt factory in Kaizuka, Osaka. They learned about the health benefits of eating yogurt and got to tour the plant as the yogurt being produced and packaged. But the best part of the day was taking pictures with the giant display items! This is Chris with the 3rd/4th grade teacher, Ikumi.

After months of training, Michael completed his second marathon. The Kyoto Marathon is a wonderful race in a beautiful city. Unfortunately, Michael's legs started to cramp up around the mid-way point and he had to do a lot of walking during the second half of the race. That said, he still set a Personal Best by 9 minutes! Next up...maybe Kobe Marathon in November.

Today Michael started at new 4-part chapel series at KCS called "Honoring God with Your Body." The first message was on how to honor God with our MOUTHS. According to Ephesians 4:29, God does not want us to use "unwholesome talk." Rather, we are to use our words to benefit, bless and build up those around us. Please pray that this message will have a lasting impact on both the students and the staff. In future months Michael will talk about how to honor God with our hands, our ears and our feet.

Any time that New Years Day falls on a Sunday, church attendance in Japan is a bit lower than usual. The reason for this is that this is the biggest family holiday of the year in Japan, so many people have family obligations. However, this year at Oasis Church, our New Years worship service was packed. Why? Because we had three young men getting baptized, that's why! We started our gatherign with worship and a short teaching time on baptism. This was followed by testimonies and the baptisms. This occasion was extra special because it was the first time that we have done a baptism indoors. We found a big swimming pool that we set up in Noji's living room that worked better than we could have imagined. This was followed by a wonderful potluck lunch. What a great way to start 2017! You can see more photos here.
